Jebba Hubba, Hubby, Baby Bubba and the Kitty Combo!

For a few weeks now we have been watching these lily like plants send up singular tall stalks from their centers. There are three in the “shrub garden” and a couple near the tool shed, and a coupe more out in the front landscaping. After a couple weeks the ends of each stalk started to form bulbs that kind of looked like a cross between a poppy pod and a spring onion.

Then this week they started to open…

The three plants in the “shrub garden” area opened into these purple puff blossoms. They have the same look to them as dandelion puffs have but they are purple of course and each puff sits on top of a shoulder height (my shoulder height)stalk.

They are really quite odd and yet kinda pretty. Anyone know what they are?

Spider Face

Trixie has a new name — Spider Face.

Hubby called her Spider Face after she kept sniffing and brushing by his legs. Her whiskers felt like a spider crawling on him. He was getting really annoyed because she did it quite a few times in one day — the same day we had to kill a multitude of spiders outside in the mulch… I think he had the creepy crawly feeling all over him and she happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Poor Trixifer.

Well, here is some big news… I have decided to make a wedding cake!

Why? Well, I just want to see if I can. I think as long as I stay organized with my recipes, schedule and production I can do it! I decided that I I will make a white cake, with swiss buttercream frosting and strawberry filling. This is the first step I hope of the strawberry filling. I decided to make my own Freezer Jam/Preserve filling and test it to see if it will work with the cake.

This is a super easy recipe and comes out quite tasty. Hubby and I tested it out on vanilla ice cream and it was Mouth Wateringly delicious! Because, it is so delicious I decided that a few lucky people (shhh it’s a secret) will receive their very own 8oz jar of Jebba Hubba Strawberry Freezer Jam in the very near future.

I used Ball® brand pectin package and followed the directions on the packet — so easy. (Here is the packet I used, but I bought it at Wegman’s. Also, I bought two packets and made two batches.)

Ingredients:
1 packet of Ball® Freezer Jam Fruit Pectin
1 1/2 cups of sugar
4 cups of hulled and crushed strawberries (I used approx. 3 1lb containers of strawberries)

You will also need:
5 Ball® 8oz. Quilted Crystal Jelly Jars

Recipe:
In a mixing bowl add pectin and sugar and mix thoroughly. Add four cups of hulled and mashed strawberries (or berries of your choice) to the sugar mixture. Mix for three minutes. Clean, and dry your 8oz jelly jars and ladle the mixture into them. Let stand 30 minutes to thicken.

Freeze for up to 1 year or refrigerate for up to 3 weeks — or eat it right then and there on some ice cream because you can’t resist it!

Here are some photos of the process and because I was feeling a little “House-wife-ish” I added a vintage filter to all the photos. Enjoy!

It’s spring time and the bears are hungry and looking for food.

Here is an article about a close encounter of the bear kind.

Note the streets in the article — Hubby’s parents and grandparents live…. you guessed it… right there. LOL! Hubby’s Grandpa called my in-laws early in the morning to let them know he had seen a bear. This is the second or third bear in a couple weeks. The first was a baby bear stuck in a tree by the elementary school and another was eating Easter candy out of the dumpster where Hubby’s Ma works.

Grandpa is one of our finest nature reporters out there in Warren County, NJ. Whether it’s a ornery deer munching on his garden, an ugly wake of buzzards in the pine trees, or a hungry black bear passing through, he keeps tabs on them all and lets everyone know whats going on!

Red Hot Sale!!

Yards sale going on now!! Oh, and it’s 90 degrees!!

We love a bargain and this lawn mower was definitely a bargin at the cost of $0 – FREE!

I belong to an online group called FreeCycle and sometimes I check it out before I buy something just to see if someone is getting rid of an item when they upgrade their own, or just don’t need something, etc… I decided to post a request. “We need a lawnmower- anyone have one they don’t need?” Three people emailed me and this is the one we went and picked up! Isn’t it snappy?

It was gas powered – gas included – and running perfectly well. Hubby removed some junk that had gotten intertwined in the blades and emptied the collection bag and was ready to test it out.

Meanwhile I was watching from the Florida room with Trixie trying to convince her that she should really help out around the house more.

Realizing my attempts to get Trixie to do some actual work were futile I headed outside to see the new lawn mower in action. It started right up and Hubby seemed quite pleased with our completely free lawn mower.

We finally got the guest room 90% finished. I sanded the spackle and painted again and we went and bought a mattress and some bedding. Hubby’s Desert Dwelling brother was the lucky first guest to spend the night in there.

A Sunny Saturday Splurge Session

Here are the two famous locations we decided to research. These are google map pictures of the Geno’s Steaks and Pat’s King of Steaks. Google must have been there when the shops were closed because there is always a line of people waiting to get their fix.

Hubby’s Desert Dwelling brother came to visit – he was out of the desert for work and in nearby Washing D.C. – and he lead us over to Geno’s to see if the steaks were just as he remembered. It’s kind of hard to miss Geno’s with all the bright orange paint and neon signs and the huge crowd of people milling around. Although we headed to Geno’s first we also sampled Pat’s so this will be a side by side comparison of the rival cheesesteak eateries.

It was a gorgeous day so we didn’t mind waiting in line. Both lines were about 20-30 people deep and artfully snaked around the buildings and outdoor tables – no line jumpers anywhere in sight. Everyone knew where the end of the line was and patiently waited for their turn to order. Pat’s line was slightly longer but moved at the same rate as Geno’s line. (Geno’s Left / Pat’s Right)

While waiting we got to notice the flair of both legendary eateries. Geno’s was obviously loud with it’s bright orange paint, shiny tile, and the hundreds of celebrity photos and firehall patches on the walls. Geno’s definitely gets your attention! Pat’s was less assuming only painted in white with a singular sentiment about it’s cheesesteaks. (Geno’s Left / Pat’s Right)

Geno’s leaves you to yourself when it comes to ordering by offering the names of what you can order while Pat’s has very specific rules that may or may not be daunting to a new comer. As Pat’s suggests “If you make a mistake, don’t panic, just go to the back of the line and start over”

Once you finally reach the order window you better have your order AND money ready. Geno’s offers less variety than Pat’s but both are limited in that you order what they have and you don’t make special requests. We decided to get the traditional Steak wit whiz (“wit” being “with onions” and “whiz” being “Cheese Whiz”). Geno’s sandwich is $8.25 and Pat’s sandwich is $7.50 (we opted for mushrooms on the Pat’s steak and it was $8.00 – don’t worry I took bites without the mushroom so I wouldn’t discredit the experiment/research results). Both are actually overpriced in my opinion but it’s a tourist thing and it was all in the name of Research. It wasn’t really that bad and I didn’t mind because I was treating my Hubby and his desert dwelling brother Steve!

You place your order and then you can peer into the windows to see the cooks hard at work flip flip flipping the cheesesteak meat on the griddle. (Geno’s top / Pat’s bottom)

And now we were ready to eat – We went to Pat’s second and only ordered one to share since we didn’t want to be big huge monsters and eat two whole cheesesteaks each!

Innards of the cheesesteak – sorry that Pat’s is blurry – I was holding up the actual devouring and I had to move my hands out of the way before they were bitten! tee hee. Both are very similar sandwiches. Geno’s keeps the thin steaks kind of whole compared to Pat’s more chopped style think steaks. Both had an okay amount of cheese – I like more cheese personally. And truthfully I like the sandwich to be juicier – maybe I am just picky or maybe these two landmarks are dishing out a lesser quality sandwich because they don’t really have to worry about pleasing customers anymore. (Geno’s Left / Pat’s Right)

Here is another comparison – which mouth is bigger? (Desert Dwelling Steve left / Hubby Right)

I wrapped up my Geno’s steak because I knew I wanted a taste of Pat’s but the boys both devoured their steaks and were ready for the next one. Like I said before we split the Pat’s steak and ordered another couple sodas to wash it down.(Geno’s Left / Pat’s Right)

We all voted and Pat’s was the unanimous winner! In my opinion it won because of the better chopped think steak making it more juicy. Also, the crust of the bread was more crusty and added a nice texture and flavor – the bread was only slightly better than Geno’s both were actually really good bread. And Pat’s also won because you can get mushrooms on your steak there!

I guess you can travel to Philly and make your own informed decision or you can go with my opinion. But if you need a little more convincing and another expert opinion maybe his will suffice:

South Jersey Reporter Biggie Phil sent us this new wild kingdom – So. Jersey turkeys represented!

This one he calls “Backyard Strut”.

Raise the Roof!

Saturday’s weather forecast didn’t look or sound so good from the reports I had gotten. Driving to work all week the Channel 7 Meterologist Bill Evans (on PLJ) ket reminding me that Saturday was the worst day of the week. Rain showers off and on.

Ughhhh. That was bad news because Hubby and I were supposed to go to our friend’s house and help them put a new roof on their house. You can see how rain all day would be bad for new roof application right? I called Jen and she assured me that she was using her “positive thinking” and that her weather forecast said only a 10% chance of rain. I guess it is possible that 45 minutes away would have a completely different forecast.

Apparently breakfast was at 7AM at their house and work began at 8AM – we showed up at 8:50AM. The truth of the matter is that is dang early and both Hubby and I would be zombies if we even attempted to be at their house for that time. Just keepin’ it real folks!

Hubby got to work right away assessing the “shingle removal” process when we got there. He stayed on the ground for a good portion of the morning with half of the guys. They had a lot os shingles to carry/haul/drag to the dumpster.

(By the way cast of characters include: Hubby, Dave #1, Dave #2, the other Gary, Bob, Rob, Jeremy, and John.

I hung out with Jen, her mom, her sister, and the little butter bean! The little butter bean was chowing down on some turnips – yumm?

The man of the house decided he was enough of a mountain man to only wear a t-shirt, and shorts in the 50 degree weather. It was quite overcast and windy I don’t know how he wasn’t chilled to the bone.
(Sorry I didn’t get a picture of those sexy legs he was showing off – woo woo!!

Our friends had to get two permits. One for the work on the roof ($35) and one for the dumpster they had to rent ($15 for permit, $450 for dumpter rental). The dumpter was definitely needed and they loaded it up pretty well. There was no getting around the need for it.

They finished scraping off all the layers of old shingles and rolled out the tar paper. Although it was overcast the rain was holding off and that was a good thing.

Then it was time for lunch. 5 pizzas, 2 orders of garlic knots hit the spot and the men were ready to get back up there. Dave #1 was the driving force of the day with the most experience both in roofing and rallying the troops. Jeremy was the work-horse of the day carrying 60-70lb packs of shingles up the ladder and onto the roof. I think the general consensus was that “He is a machine!”. All of the other guys did their part wether it was assisting with cleanup, handing shingles to the installers, nailing, going to Loews two (or was it Three?) times. It was great that they were all there to help get the job done.
(I climbed up the ladder to deliver a blade for a knife and whipped out my camera to get a up close and personal view of the newly laid shingles. I am pretty sure this is when the nail gun became jammed – how many first time home owners does it take to un-jam a nail gun?

It was late and dark (I think it was maybe 7PM or 8PM – i lost track of time) when the roof was finally finished so there isn’t a completed photo. It does look really great however, so imagine it in your mind! LOL I am glad the rain held off – thank goodness for Jen’s positive thinking. And, I am glad the roof was completed so they can sleep well at night.

I didn’t even help with the process but PHEWW what a big job!
